Activities of KOVISE - 15 April to 14 May 2016

2 May 2016 - Village Exposure Visit (Villages in Radhapuram Taluk) and hands on experience for collection of plant materials for Herbarium

Visit to Koothankulam Bird Sanctuary :

On 2 May 2016, We had a discussion with the bird watcher and enthusiast Mr.Paul Pandian and he explained about the migratory birds in details to the kids and had impart an interest on birds to the minds of the younger generation.

On 4th May visited a farmer's household cattle shed

On 4th May 2016, conducted training for farmers in Pazhavoor Village on Sustainable farming techniques. This programme was organised by ADA Valliyoor and sponsored by Reliance Foundation. Kovise Foundation issued Certificate of Participation. It was identified that farmer by name Maheswaran was engaged himself in cultivation of traditional paddy varieties and with his effort he motivated 15 farmers in organic farming.

Cattle Management in Villages

During my visit to my native and nearby villages I captured the above pictures which made me to write this article.I captured this first picture near INS Kattaboman near Vijayanarayanapuram. That lady was taking water from a small channel nearby and poured it on her cow. This even made me to feel that even cows were also suffering from this summer. I spoke to the lady and gathered some informations. She said that she was from the nearby village and she had taken this cow for grazing. I asked her why she was travelling such a long distance for grazing and bathing her cow. She said that they travelled to this distance insearch of grazing lands and said she made the cow to chill to maintain its body temperature. She also replied that they did not have proper cow shed for their cows.

The other picture was taken in our native village. It was a place where the farmer sheltered their cattle. I asked whether there were facilities to collect cow dung and urine. He said that he was not able to construct one because of his poor financial status.

On seeing these two things I shared my suggestions to my mother which I am sharing here too

1. Establishment of public cattle with good facilities and the farmers can use it by giving rent.

2. The dung and urine can be collected and used for the farm lands

3. Each village can develop a community pasture land

4. All cattle have to be insured

5. Training has to be given for preparation of diary products

6. Ground nut cake, Rice husk and Cotton seed have to sufficiently available

With a heart full of garden and a desire to create a green space in our home, we are paraded to bring a change in our home. Those tiny green friends of yours must be smiling at you all the time, which flashes a new ambience indoors.

Here are some Indoor plants displays & some wonderful indoor green ideas.A simple collection of plants can give an elegant visual appeal. We can try out various combinations based on their color, shape, size & texture

We have options for water & watering problems. Creative arrangements of some desert hardy plants can bring a desert landscape indoors. They hardly needs to be watered !!

The best rescue from a space constraint issue is to explore our home walls. Adding greenery will be much easier, when we utilize walls for plants display.

Kitchen windows are best suited for growing herbs, from where we can harvest fresh herbs for dishes. The simple idea here is indoor plants are planted in a hanging pots suspended on a curtain rod.

Another most structured plant that grown indoors in water, effortlessly is Lucky Bamboo, which actually is not a bamboo, but an indoor plant species Dracena !

These simple indoor plants can pave way to begin sustainability at home. We will see how, shortly………

Comparison of Aquaponic & Hydroponic Gardening

Aquaponics and Hydroponics are both soil free method of cultivating crops. Aquaponics is the marriage of aquaculture (raising fish) and Hydroponics (the soil - less growing of plants)

Hydroponics Vs Aquaponics

Hydroponics is an art of growing plants without soil using only water and chemical nutrients. In Hydroponics you give a plant's what it needs and when it needs and the amount of nutrients needs will deliver to the roots in highly soluble form where the roots search the nutrients and extract them.

Aquaponics grows the fish and plant in one integrated system. The fish waste provides an organic food source for the growing plants and the plants provide a natural filter for the water the fish lives in. This is an environmentally friendly, naturally food-growing method. Without fish and plants being grown together, you don’t have aquaponics. In aquaponics, you create a natural ecosystem where you rely on bacteria and composting red worms to convert the ammonia and solid waste from the fish into a complete plant food.

In both methods, the plants roots are constantly bathed in highly oxygenated, nutrient-rich water, and both see growth rates far above those found in soil-grown plants.

Advantages of Aquaponics Vs Hydroponics

In Hydroponics chemical nutrients are used, monitoring regularly and PH should be maintained. Hydroponics is growing in a sterile, controlled environment.

Aquaponics is completely organic, just feeds your fish, no need to monitor daily, need to check the ammonia and PH levels weekly once. Aquaponics is an ecosystem of plants, fish, bacteria and worms utilizing natural bacterial cycles to convert fish wastes to plant nutrients.

In Hydroponics water should be discharged periodically because the salts and chemicals build up in the water and become toxic to plants.

Whereas in aquaponics no need to discharge the water, there is a natural balance of nitrogen just refill water when it evaporates.

Conclusion

In both systems, plants see better growth rates in comparison with those that are grown in soil. Aquaponics have several advantages compared to Hydroponics, it provides harvest of plants as well as fish. Unlike traditional soil gardening, there is no weeding, no soil borne insects, no manual watering and no fertilizing.

WORKING MODEL OF AQUAPONICS SYSTEM

There are three different styles of systems used in aquaponics for growing plants. These are DWC (deep-water culture), NFT (nutrient film technique) and media –based. The first two are techniques borrowed from hydroponics and are a bit more costly and advanced.

For beginners to aquaponics, it’s highly recommended that you choose a media-based aquaponics system design. There are several reasons for this:

1.It’s a lot easier to learn and understand the process.
2.It’s cheaper because it requires less parts.

3.A media bed performs all three filtering tasks which includes the mechanical (removes solids), mineralization (breaks down solids and sends back to the water), and biofiltration.

4.It acts as an all-in-one function because a media bed is also used as the based to grow plants.

5. Media mimics traditional soil gardening much more closely therefore, it provides better support for plants.

Coming to the home based aquaphonic system need following components

1.Need fish (It my be fresh water or aquarium types)

2. A submersible pump ...It may be RO(Res verse Osmosis ) pump or a small aquarium pump

3. Pebbles or round gravels

4. Container or net pots

5. PVC pipes ..size will vary with capacity of pump

6. Fish tank

7. Spongy filters

SAFETY OF FISHERMAN LIFE AT SEA

India has sent “Chandrayan” to Mars which is 225 million km distance from earth. India is proud of this achievement and happy. Same time, every alternative day, we see in newspaper that Indian fisher man was arrested by Srilankan navy because of crossing the border. One thing is not clear whether the border is not known to fisher man or no Indian navy near to that border to monitor our people. This issue is there for all three ocean of our country. When we sent “Chandrayan” to Mars, why cannot get the solution for our fisher man everyday problems. It is not nice to comment on naval department without knowing in details. Let us seek a solution in technically.

Whole world can be seen in hand mobile where exact location also can be displayed. India major GDB comes from Indian ITs. Our IT experts develop application software for world industry especially foreign company. India, we use them as man power supplier not much effort to use for our won development. Using our IT people, small application can be developed which can be installed in any mobile. This application help fisherman to know the location and additionally alarm system can be built-in to produce alarms. This can help to save our fisher from other country naval officers. It does not limit with arrest and some time it goes to physical abuse and damage their fishing boat.

The above application is for every individual and it can help to some extent. Same thing can be made it as a system; it can help to entire nation in many ways. Let me explain little more. To entire India, one server room can be made to get the location of all fishing boat in every 5 minutes and location can be collected in a database. With this data, it is easy to track the path of particular boat. With this system, crossing border alarm sent to fishing boat and also sent to family member(one of the family person) to know that their family person cross the border which is not safe. With this system, family can give control to the man to take care of border issue. Same time, message can be set to Indian navl officer department to give direct warning officially. In some cases, other country naval officer tortured our people or arrested our fisher man, it is easy show the evidence that our people are within the boundary. I am sure that with this system, our fisherman community and neighbour country relationship get benefits.

Till now we have seen the man-made mistakes and how our system can help. This can be controlled and can be monitored smoothly. Let us think about the natural disaster where typhoon or similar accident happened, what can be done….In worst weather condition,our fishing boat will be drifted toward the centre of the ocean or reached to some other country shore. In many cases, getting them back can take a week time and during this time, we do not where are they now. Using our new application, it is easy to track the current location and our NAVY can support them to bring back to our place. Using our own people skill and developing this application bring benefits to our fisherman community and our government can have good relationship with neighbour country on fishing matters. Let us our talent for future generation.

NATIVE SPECIES - An insight

Solanum trilobatum (Thoothuvalai)

Solanum Trilobatum commonly called "Thoothuvalai" in Tamil, is a very important herb in traditional home remedies and has amazing health benefits and medicinal uses.

Thoothuvalai is a creeper with plenty of thorns on stems and leaves. This plant adds elegance to your garden if grown as fence against your wall because of its beautiful purple flowers and attractive red fruits.It should be trimmed and trained peroidically to get dense foliage.

Medicinal value:

Almost everyone in Tamil Nadu would have heard or used it for treating cough and cold.

My Mother in law makes decoction out of thoothuvalai. This decoction is very effective for chest congestion, cough, blocked nose and even for people who suffer from sinus infection.

Ingredients:

• Solanum trilobatum leaves : 5

• Water : 1 cup(200ml)

• Turmeric powder: 1 pinch

• Garlic:1 small pod

• Cumin seeds: 1/4 tsp

• peppercorns: 1/4 tsp

Procedure:

1. Remove the thorns completely from the leaves and wash them.

2. Pound the pepper corns, garlic, cumin seeds in a mortar and pestle

3. Add the leaves and pound everything together well.

4. Boil water in a pan along with little bit organic turmeric powder.

5. Add the pounded mixture and boil till the leaves are cooked.

6. Strain and decotion is consumed without salt usually.(otherwise little salt can be added)

NOTE:

• The leaves can also be grinded and mixed with dosa /idli batter if the kids refuse to have it as decoction.

இந்த ஆல மரம் எத்தனை தலைமுறைகளை பார்த்திருக்கும்.

என்ன கம்பீரமாக நிற்கிறது. இதனிடம் எவ்வளவு கதைகள் இருக்கும். இப்படித் தான் என் மனம் இங்கு வரும் பொழுதெல்லாம் நினைக்க ஆரம்பிக்கும்.

நான் பள்ளி விடுமுறைகளின் பொழுது என்னுடைய பாட்டி வீடு இருக்கும் இந்த கிராமத்துக்கு வந்து விடுவேன். காலை வேளையில் இந்த ஆல மரத்தின் அருகில் நின்று கொண்டு நிதானமாக வீசும் காற்றை அனுபவிப்பதும் அதற்கு அருகில் இருந்த கோவில் நந்தவனத்திலிருந்து வரும் பூக்களின் மணத்தையும் முகர்வதும் என்ன மணமான நினைவுகள்.

பல வருடங்களுக்கு பின் மூன்றாவது, நான்காவது தலைமுறைகளுடன் நான் எங்கள் கிராமத்திற்கு சென்ற பொழுது அந்த ஆல மரத்தை அதே கம்பீர கோலத்தில் பார்த்தேன்.

ஆகா! கிராமத்து மக்கள் அதை தங்களின் வாழ்க்கையின் ஒரு முக்கியமான பாத்திரமாக கருதி தான் வளர்த்திருப்பார்களோ? அதனால் தான் அதற்கு இன்னமும் ஆயுள் இருக்கிறதோ?

நகரங்களில் நாம் எத்தனை மரங்களின் வாழ்க்கை பயணம் முடிவதை பார்க்கிறோம். எத்தனை பூங்காக்கள் இரவோடு இரவாக காணாமல் போவதை பார்க்கிறோம்.

இந்த மரத்தை எனது மகள், அவளது குழந்தைகளுக்கு பெருமையுடன் காண்பித்தேன்.

மரத்திற்கு பின் பச்சை பசேலென்று நிலமும் சிறிய கால்வாயும் பார்க்க அழகு.நான் நடுவே கிடைத்த நேரத்தில் Geography classம் என்னுடைய பேரனுக்கு அங்கு எடுத்தேன். Geography பாடங்களை வகுப்பிற்கு வெளியில் தான் இயற்கையான சூழலில் கற்பிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற சட்டம் வந்தால் எவ்வளவு நன்றாக இருக்கும்.

அடுத்த முறை செல்லும் பொழுது அங்கு வசிக்கும் குழந்தைகளுக்கும் பாடம் எடுக்கவேண்டும் என்று ஆசை படுகிறேன்.

என்பது வள்ளுவன் வாக்கு.

(மணிபோல் தெளிந்த நீரும், வெட்ட வெளியான நிலமும், மலையும், அழகிய நிழல் உடைய காடும் இவை நான்கும் உள்ளதே அரண் ஆகும்)

மரங்களின் எண்ணிக்கை குறைந்து கொண்டே வருவதால் ஏற்படுகின்ற விளைவுகளை நாம் அவ்வப்போது சந்தித்து கொண்டு தான் இருக்கிறோம். காரணம் மனித விதிமீரல்களே. இந்த நிலை தொடர்ந்தால் பருவ மழை முற்றிலும் பொய்த்து விடும், நீர் வளம் குறைந்து விடும், மண் அரிப்பு ஏற்படும். நம் எதிர்கால சந்ததியினர் மரங்களின் வாசங்களை அனுபவிக்காமல்போகக்கூடிய நிலை ஏற்படும்.

மரங்களின் முக்கியத்துவத்தை நாம் அனைவருக்கும் கொண்டு செல்ல வேண்டிய கட்டாயத்தில் இருக்கிறோம். எனவேமரம் வளர்ப்பதின் அவசியத்தை புகுத்தும் புதிய முயற்சியில் நட்சத்திரங்களுக்கு ஏற்ற மரங்களை வளர்ப்போம். இதைத் திணிப்போம் இன்றைய மாக்களிடம்.

· அஸ்வினி நட்சத்திரத்தில் பிறந்தவர்களுக்கு எட்டி (Strychnos nuxvomica) மரம் சிறந்தது

· பரணி நட்சத்திரத்தில் பிறந்தவர்களுக்கு நெல்லி (Emblica officinalis) மரம் சிறந்தது

· கார்த்திகை நட்சத்திரத்தில் பிறந்தவர்களுக்கு அத்தி (Ficus glomerata) மரம் சிறந்தது
