THE DWARF CATTLE BREEDS
BY
Unnikrishnan
Unnikrishnan
Bos indicus are the Asian breed of cattle adapted to hot
and humid climates. India possesses more than 30 acknowledged indigenous breeds
of cattle and seven breeds of buffaloes. These breeds are mostly found in dry
parts of the country.
The dwarf cattle breeds are mostly found in the
mountain ranges of southern states of India. The popular breeds among them are
the Vechur, Kasargod dwarf, High range dwarf and Palakkad Ottapalam dwarf of
Kerala. The Punganur in Chitoor district and the Malanad Gidda and Coorg dwarf
of Karnataka.
They are immune to most of the diseases found
these days in the high milk yielding hybrid cows like Jersey and Holstein-Fresian
which survives mostly on antibiotics. These dwarf breeds are ticks and bugs
resistant.
The cow dung of these indigenous cows is more
effective as manure than those of hybrid breeds. The urine of Vechur cow is an
ingredient in many Ayurvedic medicines.
The
Milk
Although the quantity of milk produced by these
dwarf breeds are much less (average of 2 to 3 litres of milk a day) when
compared to those foreign hybrid cows, the quality is far superior.
The medicinal property of Vechur cow’s milk is
documented traditionally in Ayurveda. It is proven that the protein rich milk
of Vechur cow has more anti microbial properties than that of the antibiotic
Ampicillin. The Vechur Ghee
produced from Vechur cow’s milk, is famous for its high medicinal values due to
the presence of A2 beta-lactalbumin protein and higher arginine content which
is good for the people recuperating from severe health disorders like cancer.
Maintenance
The dwarf breeds are disease resistant and so
they need zero maintenance. They survive on the locally available fodder and
free ranging is the best option. You need not spend money on calcium
supplements, cattle feeds or any medicines. For a person with 2acres of land
one dwarf cow can produce enough manure to nourish your farm land.
Availabilty
Most of the dwarf breeds were in the verge of
extinction as a cause of the government’s policy to castrate all the indigenous
bulls in the years 60s and 70s saying that they are less milk yielders, thus
introducing the artificial insemination by importing semen of hybrid cattle
like Jersey, Holstein fresian , Swiss Brown, Redpoll etc. Then in the 21st
century we became aware of the quality of our breeds, thus again finding and
breeding our indigenous cattle. The Kerala government which once were
castrating the Vechur and Kargod dwarf bulls, has now started a programme to
breed the indigenous dwarf cattle.
They are available with the Vechur Conservation
Trust http://vechur.org/ a Government of Kerala initiative, or
else with the farmers and breeders in Kerala.

Living in a natural
way as become a dream now a day. There are many ways by which we can make our
life simple and cost effective too. One such thing is, making a floor cleaner
at home. Its not just a floor cleaner, it can be used as room fresher,
mosquitoe repellent too. Let us see how to prepare the same.
Ingredients
Neem leaf - 1 bunch
Camphor powdered -
50gms
Lemon - 2 / vinegar
- 1/2cup
Eucalyptus oil/
lemon grass oil - few drops
Making -
Grind neem leaf,
filter and boil with 1lt water
Switch off the
stove and add all other ingredients.
Cool and store the
same.
While moping the
house add 1/4 cup to 1/2 bucket water and can be used for mopping.
We can also spray
in the corners during night to avoid mosquitoes.
Few things to note
-
Make sure kids are
not around you while making the same and cover your nose while adding champor,
since the smell is strong.
1lt is sufficient
for a month.
It stays good for
6months.
