Empowering Rural Women

Sangeetha Hariprakash M.Sc., (IT)
COO - Logic Research Labs (Software Research & Development)
Rural women are working more than the urban working women, they are not only managing their family but also involved in lot of works such as managing cattle, collecting drinking water, fetch firewood maintaining farms etc., They do take a regular income generation work as cheap labour to support their family members. Their work almost go un-recognized, their voice are silenced often. They do not have the minimum basic infrastructures facilities for their habitation. A new approach is required to improve the quality of life of rural women and teach them the significance of life and the impact they can create.

How to improve the quality of rural women life?

Creating awareness of education through volunteers
Volunteers from various fields should involve and conduct innovative programmes to empower through basic education. Emphasis the necessity of education by showing them the global world through media or internet. Educate them to read and write their names and involve them to participate fully in economic life. Let them first create an awareness of their needs is essential to building stronger economies. Then they have the confidence to take initiative and make decisions to solve problems, which not only improve their families and also the society.

Skill Up-gradation Programmes
Training youths for self employment by conducting skill up-gradation programmes, like dairy, poultry, horticulture, mushroom cultivation, fisheries which related to agriculture and also product making like Dress designing, Agarbatti manufacturing, Bakery Products, Leaf Cup making, Recycled paper manufacturing etc. Paying attention to develop their ideas, identify their skills and capacity, which leading them to self employment.

Women Entrepreneurs
Specialized business start-up courses should be conducted for exposing to the opportunities. For women farmers, training, technical and marketing advice in new farming techniques should be taught through the experienced mentors. Awareness to nearby agricultural entrepreneurial training programs such as Beekeeping, Beehives making, etc., not only to self-sustain but to create and market their produce.

Child Care centers
Community centers are needed to take care their children which makes them to focus on their day work.  Also, teach them about the environmental hygiene and garbage free environment for a healthy living condition.

Basic needs of rural development
Basic needs includes roads, transportation, electricity, village health clinics, schools, community centers, storage facilities, access to markets - local and global, co-operative grocery shop,  religious institutions, communication technologies, library and finally leadership to motivate and keep the momentum and spirit for better and healthy living.

Conclusion
Agriculture is the backbone of our Nation. Rural Women comprise the largest percentage of the workforce in the agricultural sector. Pay more attention to the Rural women guarantees increase in food production, preparation and packaging. Government and private associations should realize the importance of the rural women and improve their self-sustenance by fulfilling their basic needs, undertake joint efforts to create favorable conditions and use their skills in the right manner. Surely, it leads to businesses growth and economic prosperity of our nation in this competitive world.

GARDEN ENVIRON
Garden Space
Mrs.Munavarjan
Landscape Architect, UAE
email: munna30@gmail.com

Hope the last post had been a beacon & ignited a thirst to own a Garden. It’s an omen of good change. Let us meditate a Garden!!

Darken our windows to this world, feel the smell of fresh leaves & flowers, gliding winds, birds fluttering wings for a swim, butterflies so colorful, your children chasing dragon flies, their echoing laughter…..

The swaging branches are a treatment to slow us down, as a rescue from our fast paced life. With a sprinted life where urbanism had taken dominance, we first think of suitable space for garden.

Our ancestors were blessed to have vast backyards. Wonderful reminiscence, how we use to enjoy our summer breaks in those jungle backyards with some ant bites!

We are not now bothered to leave space for our grandchildren and built up to the brink. Most of us feel that there is no space for a massive garden.

Let us explore possibilities from a no space mentality through minimal space & to a vast area of garden.

Any home can accommodate a single plant. The solution is indoor plants. An interest can begin by just growing plants in water. Yes! you heard me right ,water. A Money plant cutting or a Philodendron is the best option to grow plants easily. As a beginner it will not let you down. You can have an encouraged mood to try new plants.

Find more winning energy, when you engage your children to grow them & teach them about plants and its growth. That germination lesson in science, you can show them practically.

Fenugreek seeds are best to witness the germination. Give them an activity this weekend. Take a recycle transparent glass fill them with soil & also ask them to fill as recycle spray bottle with water. Sow the seeds and spray the water periodically, place it near window sun and light. Let them make a chart to show seed growth and germination. The roots and shoots are more visible.

If you can stop reading and check back this article…..we are already growing plants shifting from water to soil.

We can try on more indoor plants like Ivy , Jade plant , Money plant, Philodendron, Aglonema, Syngonium etc.

Every plant has different needs as we have. Make sure they get right sunlight, water and soil nutrients .Grow these plants and get free oxygen indoors.

Hydroponics is another method where we grow vegetable crops for our personal usage. But that is different topic to deal someday.

Let us begin the journey and find solutions on the way for more greenery……….

Hydroponics @ Home – A Simplified Overview
K.S. Maharasan

Introduction
The habit of maintaining a small library, gym, office, spa, and a garden at home has become a part of our present life style. Establishing and maintaining a garden on a regular basis brings in lots of satisfaction leading to peace of mind. The present scenario of concrete jungles and commitments prevent an individual to spend time in a full-fledged gardening activity. Everyone’s wish of having a small garden at home still remains as a dream in-spite of the available options such as roof top gardening, leased gardening, and window gardening and so on. This is applicable especially for nuclear families with both Husband and Wife Working, leaving the kids at Day Care centres. Their dream is not huge like having a lush green landscaped garden with lawn, ornamental plants, vegetables and fruits needed for our daily consumption. The dreams are very moderate aiming at a limited set of ornamentals especially indoors and few flowering plants. Roof top gardens are still a dream for many due to various constraints. This is the place where Hydroponics – The Soilless cultivation method comes for our support to establish and maintain a small green environment at a place of our convenience with convenient management strategies.
Hydroponics
The traditional method of cultivation and gardening involves a mechanism where plants grown in soil utilize the sun light, earth’s nutrients through water and gases in the atmosphere to grow and produce yield. The recent developments in science and technology has enabled us to break the tradition for constructive purposes in many constructive ways. Hydroponics is one such tradition breaking strategy where the plant is made to grow on a soil-less medium. The nourishment is done directly to the roots of the plant with the balanced diet of essential nutrients in solution form. The core principle is to feed the plant(s) with a solution (Water) that contains the required nutrients in right proportion. Hydroponics is proved to have several advantages over soil gardening in terms of growth rate, yield, resistant to pests, and so on. The plants receive the nutrients directly from water that is enriched with the required nutrients. The other environmental benefits are less water consumption, re-use of the surplus nutrients, less space, minimal manure, fewer pesticides and many more.
Types of Hydroponic Methods
i.                    The. Wick system is the simple passive hydroponic method, where the growing medium receives the required nutrients from the nutrient tank via wick.
ii.                  The Water Culture method is the simplest among all active hydroponic methods. The plants are made directly to float on the nutrient solution using a floating platform made of foam. Oxygen supply is done with a help of pumps similar to the ones found in aquariums.
iii.                 Flow & Drain Method: This method works on the concept of re-use, where the growing tray / platform is temporarily flooded with nutrient solution and then draining the solution back into the reservoir using a pump – timer circuit.
iv.              Drip Method:  It is the most widely used type where the system comprises of a component that makes the nutrient solution to get dripped onto the base of each plant and subsequently a recovery component to collect the excess nutrient solution and store it in the reservoir for re-use.
v.                   Nutrient Film Technic Method:  In this method, the plant is grown on a medium with a tray like structure at the bottom, where a constant flow of nutrient solution will be maintained. The operating principle is similar to the portable water fountains that decorate marriage halls in the present days. Nutrient refilling provision is there.
vi.                 Aeroponic Method: It is a high tech method, where Air is the primary growing medium. The roots will be made to hang in the air, where misting process supplies the nutrient solution. A timer circuit will run the nutrient pump set up in order to avoid drying of roots.
Conclusion
The days of dreaming about having our own garden is slowly disappearing through the alternative methods like roof top gardening, pavement gardening and window gardening. Hydroponics is one such alternate strategy that is applicable for Hobbyists and also for agriculturalists. Practicing Hydroponics in large scale requires proper planning with provisions to establish and maintain the infrastructure with the help of consulting agencies. The awareness about Hydroponics is on the increase in our state leading to the emergence of new consultants, increased adoption rates and varied methods. Practicing hydroponics at home, especially with a moderate objective of maintaining a green environment around the living and working place might not require a solid plan and investment. An awareness on execution plan, plants, choice of hydroponic method and nutrient solution will enable every individual living in a concrete jungle to have his own private garden containing not only a Money Plant or Tulsi, but also a rich collection of plants including herbs, small ornamentals, flowering plants, etc.
This article is an outcome of the Author’s compilation of information based on the experience in attending an awareness workshop on Hydroponics organized as a part of the Bio Business Workshop Series on  Dissemination of Innovative Technology by Dr. Philomena George, Dr. S.Kavitha and Dr. C.Vani of  the School of Biotechnology and Health Sciences, Karunya University on March 16, 2016.

Indian Coastal and Fishing Towards Rural Development
Dr. Muniyandy ELANGOVAN, M.Eng, Dr.Eng
Maritime consultant (Naval Architect)

Any one ask us “which part is important in your body”, definitely people do not have an answer except “evrynothing”. I mean every part is important and it has got own function to carry out as duty in every human body. In a family, “who is important”, the answer is all. For the nation, which department is important and which department is to be neglected, then the answer is all departments is important. Every department should have a development and the difference can come only at priority that depends of the investment requirements. In all priority can be included and not the negligence. Similarly for the development of nation, rural development is a must and can not be a developed nation without rural development. This does not mean that government does not support or neglected this department.

When compare to all country, India is a good place (geographically) where there is no need of climatic control equipment like AC, heater, etc. Additionally, India is called as Aanmehapoomi (Divine place for spiritual). Now a days, weather is getting bad because of fast pollution (so called technology development). For the rural development, many departments and industries can bring changes. I focus on finishing industry is one of the rich industry (rich in more people) where complete coastal people are involved in this business for survival. My intention of this article is to bring some of the issues/needs which can bring faster development to rural through fishing industry.

I remember one cartoon picture for this situation. Three persons were pulling the vehicle which is fitted with squared wheel and one manager is behind them to manage. One person hold a circular wheel and asking the manager “can I help you”. The manager says that we are busy and do not disturb us. The same way, people work hard and there is less investment towards improving in the work what we do routinely.  When I was in Hiroshima University, Japan, there was a project came to our department which involves many professor from different universityto design efficient fishing vessel for fisherman. You might think, how it is going to help for fisherman.

Film industry and fishing industry are biggest industry in India. In fishing industry, few million people are involved in this. Saving one rupee per person can bring few million rupees. In India, fishing boats are built in traditional way for many years by some people. For any floating body, hull is the most important which decide the performance of the ship/vessel/boat. Better hull needs less fuel and faster in voyage. In foreign country, they build ship for us butnever share the hull information to any one. Japan government, did this service to fishing industry by providing better hull to reduce fuel expenses for fisher man. I do not say that present fishing boats are in efficient. Our government is spending lot of money in crore to fisher as a diesel subsidiary.  Why not spend a few lakhs for good design which bring direct fuel saving and directly reduce the fishing boat operational expenses.

Our attitude is getting product or service from other country for lesser price. No body think that this is for short period and it works only till our products or service is getting closed. Later stage, we need to buy the product whatever it cost which is fixed by other country.  Our space technology is equally well developed when compare to other developed nation. Similar effort and research can bring faster development to fishing industry. Another reason is that government official must take initiative to standardize this fishing vessel and utilize our people knowledge in developing useful design and tool to improve fishing industry growth. Next time, let us discuss some more issues which are faced in fishing industry and how can be eradicated will be discussed.

RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA
Mrs. Viveka Sundar
Manager - IT and Training, TechNet Mentors FZCO,United Arab Emirates,
Mobile: +971 56 4155307; Email    : viveka.sundar@technetmentors.ae
The concept of rural development is quite comprehensive and extensive. G. Shah defines rural development as “the development of rural areas, often rural development has meant the extension of irrigation facilities, expansion of electricity, improvement in the techniques of cultivation, construction of school building and provision of educational facilities, health care etc
This is considered to be a lop-sided view of understanding rural development. Of late, rural development signifies a complex and long term process involving fundamental transformation of rural society both at social and economic levels. It represents planned programmes to improve the quality of the life-style of the ruralites.
Components of Rural Development:
Rural development entails some components. They are as follows:
1. Rural development seeks to transform all the sectors of rural economy – the primary sector, the secondary sector and the tertiary sector.
2. It is concerned with the improvement of the standard of living of the ruralites through the provision of health and medical facilities, employment opportunities including vocational training, educational facilities etc.
3. It brings about significant improvement in the socio-economic conditions of the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, the landless agricultural labourers and the marginal and small fanners.
Essential Aspects of Rural Development:
The essential aspects of rural development are as follows:
1. Agricultural development constitutes the crucial aspect of rural development. Agricultural development is possible through the use of better seeds, adequate fertilisers, manures, and pesticides, adequate supply of water and effective implementation of land reform measures.
2. By effecting changes in the socio-economic institutions, rural development seeks to change the socio-economic structure of the rural community.
3. The effectiveness of the rural development programmes necessitates political non-interference. The persons associated with these programmes should be given adequate freedom to carry out their plans and programmes with undivided attention.
4. The success of the rural development programmes depends on the co-operative orientation and attitude among the ruralites. The functioning of the co-operative societies goes a long way in improving the conditions of the vulnerable sections of the rural set-up.
5. Rural development programmes demand the active participation of the ruralites. While formulating these programmes the opinions, attitudes, drives and interests of the rural people should be taken into account. Further, dedicated and committed village leaders should come forward to guide the masses for bringing about rural development.
Integrated Rural Development:
It is claimed that the concept of Integrated Rural Development was originally propounded by the World Bank. In India the concept was put forward in the year 1976 at the All-India Science Congress by C. Subramanyam, the then Finance Minister of India.
He viewed integrated rural development as “systematic, scientific and integrated use of all our natural resources and as a part of this process enabling every person to engage himself in a productive and socially useful occupation and earn an income that would meet at least the basic needs.”
He holds the view that the use of natural resources is possible only through the application of science and technology. Further, proper application of science and technology results in the fulfilment of basic social needs.
G. Parthasarathy refers to four ‘routes’ in the context of integrated rural development: (i) the institutional route of Gunnar Myrdal, (ii) the ‘New Economics’ route, (iii) the Neo-Marxian route and (iv) the Gandhian route. V.K.R.V. Rao defines integrated rural development as “the optimum utilization of the natural and human resources of a given rural area for the enrichment of the quality of life of the population.”
The concept of integrated rural development addresses itself to various rural problems like widespread poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, exploitation, inequitable distribution of land, poor health conditions etc. It signifies that various facets of rural development are integrally connected.
It is a holistic concept rather than a sequential one. K. Om Prakash and G. Satyanarayan rightly observe that integrated rural development embraces all the activities of enrichment and betterment of the overall quality of rural life through appropriate development of man power, resources, infrastructural facilities and provisions of minimum needs and livelihood. It has far-reaching socioeconomic and political implications for the life of the ruralites.
